Folk Art Star Shaker Card

Good morning, everyone! I wanted to pop in today with a shaker card idea that I've wanted to share for the last few months. Often, I have ideas that I never get to during the die introductions and this one has been nagging at me. Then last weekend, I taught a class at the Stamp Joy event hosted by Taylored Expressions. I heard from quite a few people that stitching on felt was a challenge for them and they would love to learn more by stitching on paper. That was just the motivation I needed to finally put this card together. It's been probably two years since I've actually made a card, but I'm so glad I did!

This is a pretty quick and easy project, but the shaker element makes a big impact! I began by cutting a 4 3/4" x 6 3/4" panel from white cardstock. Then, I die cut the Folk Art Star Details Die. I kept the die in place after cutting and ran the panel through my die cut machine a second time using an embossing pad to give the shaped base plate an opportunity to make a nice, deep impression. Then, again keeping the die in place, I very lightly blended a bit of ink around the edges of the die. I used Catherine Pooler Mint To Be. This helps the star shape really pop on the white background.

From there, I removed the die and stamped the sentiment under the star. This sentiment is from the Taylored Expressions Sweater Weather Cardmaking Kit, stamped in Catherine Pooler Spruce ink. Then, I sewed a red star to the back of the panel (I snipped of the very tips of the red star so they wouldn't be in the way) and stitched down each arm of the star. You could also leave this center star open, but I liked the pop of color there in the middle.

Then I added some acetate to the back of my panel and used foam tape to create a shaker box. I used chunky Martha Stewart glitter to fill the shaker (I don't think they make this one anymore, but any chunky glitter or shaker filler would do). The front panel is mounted to a white A7 card base.

Like I said, this isn't a terribly complicated card and it came together quite quickly, but the shaker element really makes a big impact. This card is also larger than the A2 cards I used to make all the time, but that just means it's big enough to send a holiday photo!

Thank you for stopping in today! Have a wonderful weekend and we'll see you again soon!

  • Your card is so pretty!!!! It is a beautiful design and isn’t all cluttered up with a lot of extra stuff. Thanks for sharing!! I love your style and am envious of the students in your class at Stamp Joy!
